Role summary
Wellstar Health System is hiring a cook for an evening shift in LaGrange, Georgia. The role focuses on preparing wholesome, appealing meals for patient meal service, retail food service, and other satellite areas within a healthcare setting.
This position requires a genuine interest in culinary work, strong attention to food safety, and the ability to work with heightened sanitation standards because meals are prepared for people with compromised or vulnerable immune systems. The cook must also be able to manage time well, organize multiple tasks, and maintain food quality under potentially busy production demands.
Work shift
Evening shift, 3:30 PM to 11:30 PM, United States time.
Key responsibilities
- Prepare menu items for patient meals, retail service, and other designated food service areas using standard recipes and either conventional cooking or cook/chill production methods.
- Follow HACCP requirements and local county health department rules to protect customers and coworkers.
- Wash hands regularly, use gloves appropriately, and maintain infection-control practices, including personal hygiene standards such as nail length and appearance.
- Keep workspaces clean, orderly, and free from spills or trip hazards.
- Check and log food and equipment temperatures and quickly correct or escalate anything that falls outside acceptable ranges.
- Store food and supplies correctly using proper labeling, dating, and rotation practices.
- Use all equipment safely and report unsafe conditions such as damaged cords or other hazards.
- Arrive on time, follow the department schedule, and work weekends and holidays as needed.
- Set up, maintain, and close down the workstation according to area-specific requirements.
- Follow verbal and written instructions accurately and complete required checklists and forms.
- Operate and care for kitchen equipment according to manufacturer and department guidance.
- Stay flexible and support teammates across the department when needed.
- Work professionally with leadership and coworkers to support department and hospital goals.
- Communicate clearly and respectfully, while showing respect for cultural differences among team members and customers.
- Prepare ingredients and menu items using culinary techniques such as peeling, cutting, butchering meats, and dicing, julienning, or mincing vegetables.
- Use appropriate cooking methods, including dry, wet, and combination techniques.
- Handle vegetables, meats, spices, pasta, and dairy products correctly during preparation and cooking.
- Read recipes accurately and apply measurement, conversion, and scaling skills as needed.
- Perform additional duties assigned by the organization and comply with all policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
Requirements
- High school diploma is preferred, or equivalent experience is acceptable.
- Ability to speak and understand English, and to work with basic math.
- Ability to complete required computer-based training and pass the associated exam.
- Ability to follow safety rules in a healthcare food service environment.
- ServSafe Food Handler certification is required.
