V/Line is dedicated to connecting Victorians through safe, reliable, and accessible transport solutions. Our operations extend to more than 3,700 weekly train and coach services, an extensive freight network, and ongoing substantial rail investments. We are expanding and look to welcome committed individuals to join our team of over 2,700 employees.

The Conductor role, based in Bendigo, is vital to the success of our Customer Operations Group. As a Conductor onboard our trains, you will be primarily accountable for the safety of passengers and smooth operations during journeys. This full-time, permanent position operates on a 24/7 roster and requires flexibility to work from various stations along the Bendigo line within 80 km of your home depot or residence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver excellent customer service and provide information to passengers in person and through PA announcements.
  • Prepare trains for service by ensuring cleanliness and proper functionality.
  • Manage fare collection, including ticket sales, inspections, and advising passengers on fares.
  • Oversee train departures and assist passengers with luggage at stations.
  • Coordinate coach operations during scheduled and unexpected disruptions or events.
  • Identify and report any faults or issues related to equipment or facilities promptly.
  • Maintain constant radio communication with the train driver, monitoring passenger boarding and alighting numbers via designated apps.
  • Provide first aid and perform spot cleaning onboard as needed.

Candidate Profile

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Adaptability to changing work environments and schedules.
  • Strong dedication to safety culture and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Minimum educational qualification of Year 10 completion.
  • Possession of a valid Victorian Driver Licence.
  • Experience in face-to-face customer service and a commitment to workplace safety.
  • Previous involvement in rail or transport is preferred; alternatively, backgrounds in hospitality, retail, supply, manufacturing, or care work are valuable due to shared safety and service focuses.

Benefits and Additional Information

  • Paid training leading to a Certificate III in Rail Customer Service.
  • Competitive hourly wage of $51 plus superannuation and free Myki travel.
  • Opportunity to make a real community impact by connecting people across Victoria daily.
  • Work within a collaborative team environment in a dynamic and evolving company.
  • Flexible work arrangements to support individual needs.
  • Commitment to an inclusive, diverse, and respectful workplace that values contributions irrespective of gender, ethnicity, religion, age, sexual orientation, or disability.
  • Support available for candidates requiring accessibility accommodations during recruitment.
  • This role is subject to pre-employment and medical assessments, adhering to safeworking and child safety standards.
  • Remuneration aligns with the V/Line Rail Operations and Administrative Employees Agreement 2023.
