Job description

Role overview

V/Line is building a 2026 talent pool for Service Officer opportunities in Colac and Camperdown. This expression of interest is specifically for these locations, and external recruitment for Conductors is not being conducted. Applications may be reviewed as they come in, and suitable candidates may be held on file and contacted when matching vacancies open up.

What the role involves

As a Service Officer, you will be the initial point of contact for passengers and play an important part in keeping station operations safe, orderly, and customer focused. The work is practical and varied, and includes assisting with Myki sales, making announcements, supporting coach coordination, handling disruptions, and helping to calm situations when needed. You will also watch for hazards, keep the station presentable, and carry out upkeep tasks such as cleaning toilets and washing windows.

These positions may be offered as full-time or part-time and may be permanent or fixed term. All roles require availability for a 24/7 rotating roster. Depending on operational needs, you may also be asked to work at stations anywhere on the South Western Line, up to 80 km from your home depot.

Key duties

  • Support ticketing activities, fare checks, and luggage handling.
  • Help ensure trains are prepared for service, including cleanliness and basic functionality.
  • Respond to service disruptions and emergencies with steady, professional judgment.
  • Record and escalate issues with equipment or station facilities.
  • Deliver friendly and effective face-to-face service to passengers.
  • Maintain station presentation and monitor the site for safety risks and hazards.

What V/Line is looking for

You should be a dependable, punctual, and energetic customer service professional who communicates clearly and remains composed under pressure. The environment can change quickly, so adaptability, resilience, and a positive attitude are important. V/Line also values people who can recover well after difficult interactions and continue to act professionally.

To be considered, candidates should demonstrate strong attention to detail, confident problem-solving, and excellent in-person customer service experience. You must hold a current driver’s licence, have completed Year 10 or an equivalent level of education, and be able to work a 24/7 rotating roster. You must also live within 40 km of your preferred station for the key selection criteria.

Applicants who do not match every requirement exactly are still encouraged to apply, as the organisation values diverse backgrounds and growth potential. Alignment with V/Line values is also expected, including responsiveness, integrity, impartiality, accountability, respect, leadership, and human rights.

Training and pay

No rail background is required, as full paid training will be provided. Training includes a Certificate III in Rail Customer Service. The role also offers an attractive hourly rate, superannuation, and free Myki travel. Pay will be aligned to the V/Line Rail Operations and Administrative Employees Agreement 2023.

Additional information

V/Line connects Victorians through safe, reliable, and accessible transport, supporting travel for work, education, family, services, tourism, and trade. The organisation is growing rapidly, with more services, more trains, lower fares, and major infrastructure investment. It operates more than 3,700 weekly train and coach services, manages an extensive freight network, and employs over 3,100 team members.

Recruitment may begin before the closing of the talent community, and applications will continue to be assessed as new vacancies arise. If you progress after initial screening, your application may remain active for the rest of the year. A valid driver’s licence and face-to-face customer service experience are key selection criteria, and preference will be given to candidates living within the required distance of their station choice.

V/Line is committed to accessible recruitment and encourages candidates to request adjustments if needed. The organisation is an equal opportunity employer that values diversity and inclusion, welcomes applications from First Peoples, and recognises the support of its broader transport and planning commitments. Successful applicants will need to complete relevant pre-employment and medical checks to meet safeworking standards.

Working conditions

Service Officers may be required to sign on and work at different stations along the South West Line within 80 km of their home depot, depending on scheduling and business demand. The role requires flexibility to cover a rotating 24/7 roster.
