About the Role
The Office of Law Enforcement Oversight (OLEO) is looking for a dynamic individual who thrives on connecting with the community and ensuring their perspectives are heard and acknowledged. As a Community Engagement Specialist, you'll be deeply involved in organizing engagement initiatives, fostering partnerships, and facilitating clear communication on sensitive issues with King County's diverse communities. Your work will be rooted in principles of equity and social justice, supporting OLEO's mission to provide impartial oversight of the Sheriff's Office and promote policies shaped by community input.
Key Responsibilities
- Support and manage all aspects of community engagement projects, including planning, logistics, events, and partnership contracts, ensuring effective outreach across King County.
- Develop, revise, and distribute OLEO communications such as newsletters, advisories, releases, and social media content, including ensuring accessibility and translation needs are met.
- Identify and integrate best practices for formal collaboration between government and community partners, especially organizations serving populations adversely impacted by law enforcement practices.
- Actively participate in and contribute to OLEO's overall engagement strategy, working with colleagues to integrate community perspectives into all programs.
- Apply and promote equity and social justice principles in every aspect of your work and workplace culture.
Who We're Looking For
- At least three years of combined educational and/or professional experience in fields such as project management, community engagement, communications, community organizing, public administration, social work, or related disciplines.
- Demonstrated success managing contracts and collaborative partnerships, ideally in a government or community context.
- Experience creating clear, engaging educational or informational public materials.
- Strong ability to facilitate and contribute to inclusive planning processes that build consensus among stakeholders from varied backgrounds.
- Skill in juggling multiple projects or partnerships at once, including those with overlapping timelines and high visibility.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication abilities.
- Commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice, with knowledge of King County’s diverse communities.
- Multilingual abilities, especially fluency in one of King County’s widely spoken languages besides English, are a plus.
