About the Role

Joining the Irish Defence Forces as a Trainee Communications Operator offers a unique opportunity to be at the core of military operations while gaining advanced technical expertise. The Defence Forces — encompassing the Army, Navy, and Air Corps — are charged with defending Ireland, upholding national security, and contributing to global peace. Personnel are expected to perform with exemplary professionalism, discipline, initiative, and team spirit across diverse responsibilities.

Training and Progression

Initially, recruits undergo twelve weeks of Recruit Training to acquire essential military skills including discipline, leadership, fitness, and working cohesively in teams. This phase is followed by an additional twelve weeks of advanced 2-3 Star training to further strengthen military knowledge and operational readiness.

Successful completion of these stages leads to specialist Communications Operator training within the Communications and Information Services (CIS) Corps. Trainees will master the operation and maintenance of advanced military communications equipment facilitating secure and dependable voice, data, and radio communications to support Defence Forces missions domestically and overseas.
