Job description

Company Overview

UniServices is the commercialisation and growth division of the University of Auckland. Positioned at the nexus of research, innovation, and industry collaboration, UniServices' mission is to advance and commercialise the University's extensive research expertise.

Role Overview

This critical position within the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences focuses on driving the commercial viability and sustainability of top-tier research platforms and core scientific facilities. The role connects cutting-edge scientific research with industry applications, converting research platforms into commercially viable services and expanding external partnerships and income streams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the creation and execution of commercial strategies for research platforms, including market assessments, service packaging, and positioning.
  • Collaborate with academic and operational leaders to transform platforms into competitive industry-facing offerings aligned with faculty goals and maximising platform usage.
  • Proactively identify and secure partnerships within biotech, pharmaceutical, medtech, and research sectors by managing a robust commercial pipeline and overseeing end-to-end sales processes.
  • Translate complex scientific capabilities into clear, compelling value propositions to attract clients and funding.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for commercial clients, ensuring seamless service delivery from onboarding to invoicing, building long-term relationships, managing expectations, and identifying opportunities for repeat business and expansion.
  • Develop, review, and optimise pricing strategies and cost-recovery models to secure financial sustainability and market competitiveness.
  • Contribute to long-term commercial planning, monitor revenue outcomes, and support financial forecasting to help platforms achieve cost-neutral or revenue-positive status.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is commercially savvy, comfortable collaborating across research and industry interfaces, and adept at communicating sophisticated scientific information in accessible terms. Scientific background is not mandatory but enthusiasm for science-led innovation and infrastructure is essential. Experience in business development, scientific services, contract research, technology commercialisation, or account management, along with a strategic mindset for site-based commercial development, is highly advantageous.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Proven commercial experience within science, technology, or health sectors in New Zealand or Australia.
  • Ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders, including academic, technical personnel, and external industry partners.
  • Strong knowledge of pricing, cost recovery, and commercial sustainability principles.
  • Excellent communication skills to translate technical offerings for non-specialist audiences.
  • Collaborative and pragmatic approach with capacity to navigate complex environments.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in science, business, or a related discipline.

Prior experience supporting research platforms or scientific services is a valuable asset.

Employment Details

  • Full-time, permanent position (40 hours per week, Monday to Friday).
  • Salary range: $130,700 to $159,900 annually, dependent on experience and skills.

Benefits and Perks

  • Competitive salary with five weeks annual leave.
  • Flexible working conditions including potential for remote work and flexible hours.
  • Company superannuation/KiwiSaver contributions up to 6.75%.
  • Career development opportunities.
  • Discounted parking, generous parental leave, childcare support, and various other employee discounts.
