As part of the nursing leadership group, the postholder helps shape and implement clinical practice standards for all age groups based on best-practice guidance. The role also supports a competency-based continuing education framework for nurses and midwives across specialty areas to strengthen clinical performance and clinical leadership.

Leadership responsibilities

The role includes evaluating clinical programmes to confirm they meet the needs of patients and staff and remain aligned with departmental and organisational priorities. It involves creating measurable criteria to assess staff competence, supporting managers with clinical problem-solving and decision-making, encouraging collaborative practice, keeping accurate records of educational activities, and helping teams achieve individual, departmental, and organisational objectives. The role also supports open communication, professional growth, staff development initiatives, and appropriate use of human, equipment, and consumable resources. Where staff conduct or performance falls short of professional expectations, the nurse is expected to escalate appropriately.

Clinical practice and education

The Clinical Resource Nurse identifies learning needs and develops educational interventions accordingly. The role works with nursing staff and other disciplines to design, implement, and review educational programmes, using effective adult-learning methods, group facilitation, curriculum development, communication, and teaching approaches. The nurse helps staff incorporate new knowledge and skills into practice, maintains ongoing competency, and supports an environment where staff can develop ideas and align their practice with organisational goals.

In coordination with the Nurse Manager, the postholder reviews nursing practice and recommends changes based on current best-practice guidance. The role provides specialty-specific orientation for relevant staff, contributes to orientation programmes across the organisation, sets clear programme objectives, and evaluates outcomes. It also includes bedside clinical consultation in the area of expertise, collaboration on patient care concerns, and support for individual staff development. The nurse reviews trends in clinical practice, suggests practice updates where needed, promotes evidence-based care, and takes part in research that strengthens a research-informed clinical environment. The role also supports patient and family learning, health promotion activities, and emergency response according to organisational policies.

Communication

The postholder maintains active communication with clinical leaders to support educational initiatives. The role uses information technology to retrieve, share, and produce information when needed. It also requires strict protection of patient, family, and organisational information in line with confidentiality requirements. The nurse facilitates communication between patients, families, and the wider interdisciplinary care team as needed.

Quality, safety, and risk management

The role contributes to quality improvement by helping develop, implement, and review standards, policies, procedures, and guidelines, as well as by evaluating indicators and reporting trends and outcomes. Insights from programme reviews are used to guide future direction. The nurse supports ongoing education and research in the Nursing Department and across the organisation, promotes continuous improvement, monitors nursing care quality, audits documentation compliance, and tracks organisational KPIs and clinical indicators while reinforcing corrective actions to improve service delivery.

The position is responsible for reducing the risk of infection and cross-infection among patients, staff, visitors, and the public, and for ensuring staff follow infection prevention policies. The role also requires compliance with international patient safety goals and HA-AD patient safety goals, plus participation in interdisciplinary teams and performance-improvement projects aimed at refining processes and clinical practice.

Professional responsibilities

The nurse is expected to maintain up-to-date knowledge of evidence-based practice within the specialty and to continue personal professional development through relevant activities. The role calls for acting as a strong professional example through self-directed learning, accountability, and high work standards. The postholder must set annual performance goals with the line manager, maintain a professional portfolio, and actively build leadership capability through available internal and external learning resources.

The role also includes participating in nursing or multidisciplinary research that helps improve standards of care and obtaining accredited and non-accredited continuing nursing education units as required by HA-AD and the organisation.

Qualifications

The role requires at least 6 years of post-qualification clinical experience in an appropriate and relevant healthcare setting. Positive written references are also required, and these references must specifically confirm experience as a clinical resource nurse. One year of educator experience is preferred.
