Job description

About WindBorne Systems

WindBorne Systems enhances weather forecasting using an exclusive data asset: a worldwide network of advanced smart weather balloons capturing critical atmospheric metrics. They design, build, and operate these balloons, utilizing their data to produce weather insights that were previously inaccessible. Their mission focuses on removing weather-related uncertainties to aid humanity in adapting to climate change, whether by forecasting hurricanes or accelerating renewable energy adoption. They envision a future densely monitored by thousands of microballoons, closing observational gaps and supplying essential information for vital decisions. The founding Stanford engineer team was recognized by Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2019 and supports top investors like Khosla Ventures and Footwork VC.

Responsibilities

The Chief of Staff will closely collaborate with CEO John Dean and the leadership team, handling key strategic and operational challenges with a proactive, highly organized approach. This role involves independently managing priorities with urgency and foresight, including anticipating the CEO's needs and decisions to streamline operations and decision-making processes.

Qualifications and Skills

The ideal candidate will have experience working near critical decision points in high-pressure environments, demonstrating exceptional judgment, speed, discretion, and consistent follow-through. Essential qualities include resourcefulness, meticulous organization, constant drive for improvement, and advanced skills in Google Suite — especially spreadsheets — and familiarity with communication platforms like Slack. Preferred backgrounds include startups, fast-scaling or engineering-focused firms, strong problem-solving abilities, some engineering knowledge, and U.S. citizenship.

Ideal Attributes

  • Acts as the connective element keeping operations cohesive
  • Detail-oriented and able to remain composed amid fast-paced, chaotic situations
  • Values operational excellence alongside people management
  • Driven by working on impactful climate and weather intelligence initiatives

Benefits and Compensation

  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Dental, health, and vision insurance
  • Unlimited paid time off
  • Stock option opportunities
  • Office-provided food and refreshments

The salary range is $130,000 to $180,000 annually, with offers tailored to candidate experience and market competitiveness.
