About the Role
The New Zealand Customs Service in Wellington is seeking a highly skilled Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to provide strategic financial leadership and drive sustainable growth. This permanent full-time position reports to the Deputy Chief Executive Enterprise Services and supports the Chief Executive, Executive Board, and senior management with key financial decisions. The CFO oversees financial strategy, governance, risk management, statutory compliance, and third-party revenue management, while ensuring the organisation is well-positioned to achieve its strategic goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic financial guidance to Customs’ leadership including the Comptroller and Executive Board.
- Lead and develop Customs' finance function to enhance organisational performance.
- Ensure strong financial governance, comprehensive reporting, risk management, and adherence to statutory requirements.
- Manage government revenue responsibilities and complex third-party funding arrangements.
- Oversee enterprise-wide investment planning and portfolio management for strategic programmes.
- Build organisational capacity through effective leadership, talent development, and continuous improvement.
Candidate Profile
- Proven senior financial leadership experience within a large and complex public sector or commercial organisation.
- Strong financial, strategic, and commercial insight with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders.
- Experience operating within or closely with government and ministerial environments.
- Track record of successfully leading teams through periods of change and transformation.
- Skilled in managing fee-based funding arrangements, investment portfolios, and organisational risk.
- Chartered Accountant qualification with membership in Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand or equivalent.
- Capability to obtain and maintain Secret security clearance.
