Job description

Role overview

This is a character design opportunity with a partner company that handles the application process and all subsequent hiring steps. The position is open to candidates based in Germany.

The role focuses on creating memorable, gameplay-first characters for an ambitious video game project. You will design characters that are visually distinctive while also serving combat systems, abilities, and the broader player experience. The work is highly collaborative and spans the full development cycle, from early ideas and prototyping through production and release. It is a hands-on environment that values iteration, testing, player feedback, and continual refinement.

Success in this role requires a designer who can combine artistic judgment with practical gameplay thinking, especially in modern game development settings.

Accountabilities

  • Create and evolve gameplay-centered characters that fit naturally into combat systems and improve the overall player experience.
  • Spot opportunities for strong gameplay moments through character concepts, abilities, and mechanics.
  • Work closely with animators, gameplay programmers, and design colleagues to prototype and build combat-related features.
  • Carry character ideas through the complete production pipeline, from initial concept to final in-game delivery.
  • Develop and tune combat systems, weapon behavior, abilities, and character-specific mechanics with attention to balance and engagement.
  • Analyze player feedback, gameplay data, and metrics to refine and improve character designs.
  • Contribute to practical prototyping with engineering and design partners, including Unreal Engine-based workflows.
  • Document design intent, mechanics, and iteration changes clearly so the team stays aligned.
  • Help maintain consistency in character identity, gameplay readability, and the overall experience.
  • Keep improving designs based on testing outcomes, balancing needs, and playtest or live feedback.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a Character Designer or in a closely related role on released game titles.
  • Demonstrated ability to move character designs from concept stage through full production and launch.
  • Strong enthusiasm for third-person action games and combat-focused systems.
  • Solid understanding of character design fundamentals, including strengths, weaknesses, counterplay, and balance.
  • A portfolio that shows original character work with clear theme and gameplay integration.
  • Experience in iterative, prototype-led development workflows.
  • Familiarity with Unreal Engine 5, especially Blueprint-based approaches for gameplay or ability prototyping.
  • Strong teamwork skills for working with animators, engineers, and broader game development teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain design decisions clearly.
  • Genuine interest in gameplay systems and how character design shapes player engagement.
  • Ability to take feedback well and iterate quickly in a fast-moving creative setting.

Benefits

  • Fully remote setup with the freedom to work from nearly anywhere.
  • Generous paid time off.
  • Extra company-wide closures during the summer and winter holidays, separate from PTO.
  • Private medical and dental insurance coverage.
  • Private mental health support.
  • Annual budget for health and wellbeing.
  • Performance-based annual bonus at the studio’s discretion.
  • High-quality equipment provided for home-office setup.
  • Flexible, trust-based culture that values outcomes more than hours worked.
  • Strong focus on autonomy, creativity, and ownership.
  • Inclusive, collaborative workplace with a commitment to improvement and craft quality.
