Job Overview

This full-time role based at the MDH Dorchester County Health Department in Cambridge, MD, focuses on providing peer recovery support primarily for individuals facing substance use disorders, with extended services for those experiencing mental health, co-occurring, or gambling disorders. The specialist will respond to opioid crises, manage activities at a recovery and wellness center, and assist individuals on their recovery journeys.

Primary Objective

The role aims to help clients eliminate barriers to recovery by connecting them with resources, offering guidance and advocacy, and supporting sustained recovery efforts, all while upholding the ethical standards expected of a peer recovery specialist.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent certification from an accredited institution.
• A minimum of one year of experience delivering peer recovery support services.
• Military service as a non-commissioned officer in peer specialist classifications may substitute the experience requirement.

Preferred Qualifications

• Background working with criminal justice populations.
• Active certification as a Peer Recovery Specialist.
• Proficiency with spreadsheets and data collection tools.

Licenses and Certifications

• Obtainment of Peer Recovery Specialist certification from the Maryland Addictions Professional Certification Board within 12 months of hire is mandatory.
• A valid Maryland motor vehicle operator license is required for duties involving driving.

Special Conditions

• Employees must secure the required certification within 24 months to avoid disciplinary measures including demotion or dismissal.
• Candidates need to have maintained a recovery state for at least two years from substance use, mental health, or co-occurring disorders prior to hiring.
• Completion of supplementary training to maintain certifications is compulsory.
• Substance abuse testing will be conducted per Maryland regulations.
