Job description
About the role
The Ministry of Education New Zealand is seeking an organised and personable Business Support Officer to join its Dunedin office as part of the Otago/Southland Business Support Team. This is a permanent, part-time position based in Dunedin, Otago, with working hours of 9:15 am to 2:15 pm, Wednesday to Friday.
This opportunity would suit someone who enjoys a fast-moving workplace, takes pride in accuracy, and brings a friendly, professional approach to customer service and administration. The role is a key front-of-house position and the first contact point for the Otago District office.
What you will do
You will welcome visitors at reception, answer incoming calls, and direct enquiries to the appropriate Ministry teams, including those based in other regions. You will also support suppliers and contractors on arrival, manage visitor access cards to help maintain site security, and assist with fleet and event coordination. In addition, you will respond quickly to internal requests and provide wider business support to the Ministry team.
The role requires strong teamwork, good judgement, flexibility, and the ability to handle multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of accuracy and professionalism.
About you
To succeed in this position, you should enjoy working with people, be comfortable in a busy corporate office environment, and be ready to go the extra mile. You will need excellent communication skills, strong organisation, and the confidence to work independently when needed. A current driver licence is essential.
You should also be willing to work in line with Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct, and have, or be willing to build, an understanding of Te Ao Māori, tikanga, Te Reo Māori, and the relevance of te Tiriti o Waitangi in the public sector.
Team and environment
The Business Support Team sits within Te Mahau | Te Tai Runga (South), a frontline group working with education providers, children, and families across the Otago and Southland region. Reporting to the Business Support Manager, the Senior Support Officers provide a wide range of administrative and project support across multiple teams and functions, helping deliver shared services and contribute to the Ministry’s broader goals.
Salary
The pay range for this role is $60,879 to $72,999 per year, plus 3% KiwiSaver. The final offer will depend on the candidate’s skills and experience.
Application information
Interested candidates should submit a cover letter and resume through the application process. In the cover letter, the Ministry would like applicants to share more about themselves, including their values, motivations, strengths, transferable skills, and the perspectives they would bring to the role. Applications sent by email cannot be accepted. Recruitment is expected to begin soon after the closing date, so early applications are encouraged.
For further enquiries, contact Catherine Hendry, Business Support Manager, at catherine.hendry@education.govt.nz. Applications close at midnight on Sunday, 05 July 2026.
