Job description
About the role
Tauranga is one of New Zealand’s most rapidly expanding cities, known for its beaches, scenic walking tracks, and lively neighbourhoods. As the city continues to grow, the council is strengthening its Building Services team to support safe, high-standard development.
This position suits an experienced Building Control Officer - Processing who holds current NCAS competency in Residential or Commercial work and is ready for a new challenge. In this role, you will evaluate and certify building consent applications to confirm they comply with the Building Act 2004. You will examine plans and supporting documents, give practical technical guidance to customers, and make sure decisions are accurate and completed within required timeframes.
You will join a collaborative, experienced team that values your technical knowledge. The role offers a competency-linked pay structure, so remuneration increases as your competency progresses. Flexible working arrangements are available, along with ongoing learning and development to help you stay current with industry updates.
What you will need
Success in this role calls for a relevant tertiary qualification in a building-related field, as required under Regulation 18 of the Building (Accreditation of Building Consent Authorities) Regulations 2006. You will also need current Residential and/or Commercial NCAS competency, along with hands-on experience in building consent processing or a similar position.
A strong understanding of the Building Act 2004, Building Regulations 2006, and the Building Code is essential. You should be an effective written and verbal communicator who can explain technical matters clearly and professionally to a range of customers. A careful, structured, and detail-oriented approach to decision-making is also important.
