About the Role

We invite passionate and forward-thinking Specialist Biomedical Scientists in Microbiology (Band 6) to become part of our energetic, expanding team. Our Microbiology Service operates from the UKAS ISO 15189; 2022 accredited laboratory at William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, integrated within the Kent and Medway Pathology Network (KMPN). Our department strongly values training and supports career progression.

We seek candidates with strong microbiology expertise, leadership skills, proven experience in staff and resource management, and a history of meeting targets, implementing service improvements, and leading transformation efforts. Attention to detail and excellent communication abilities are essential.

Important: Candidates requiring a Certificate of Sponsorship for UK work must disclose this on their application, regardless of current sponsorship status. Sponsorship is available only for Skilled Worker Visa eligible roles at the application time.

Candidates must be HCPC registered and either hold or be progressing towards an IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Microbiology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute scientific procedures across all department sections as assigned by senior staff, including overseeing performance of Trainee Biomedical Scientists and (S)AHCS.
  • Process laboratory samples, delivering timely, precise, and relevant results and reports per laboratory protocols.
  • Conduct routine analyses using both automated and manual methods.
  • Make informed decisions to ensure laboratory operations are efficient and comply with health, safety, and legal regulations.
  • Develop and implement departmental systems and procedures to maintain service effectiveness and legal compliance.
  • Support service development by evaluating new assays.
  • Demonstrate initiative in all aspects of work.
  • Provide support for weekend shifts and out-of-hours emergency on-call duties.

KMPN is currently advancing network development with plans for a joint venture among the Trusts, leading transformational initiatives such as unified IT systems, procurement, and digital innovation to meet increasing service demands.
