Job description

About the Role

An opportunity has become available within the Haematology Department of the NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership (ESEL). The role requires an experienced Biomedical Scientist specializing in Haematology and Blood Transfusion. We seek an individual with a positive approach, adaptability to flexible working, strong teamwork skills, and a commitment to patient care by participating in a 24-hour Agenda for Change shift rota.

The successful candidate will be mainly based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich, but may also support other ESEL sites depending on demand. The partnership includes Royal London Hospital (hub), St Bartholomew’s Hospital, Whipps Cross University Hospital, Newham University Hospital, Homerton Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and University Hospital Lewisham.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and supervise technical and scientific duties within laboratory sections under guidance from Senior Specialist Biomedical Scientist.
  • Work flexible hours, including weekends and bank holidays, totaling a minimum of 37.5 hours weekly in line with Agenda for Change terms.
  • Rotate through various laboratory sections and support different laboratories within the ESEL network.
  • Participate in either hybrid day/night or permanent night shift schedules, with hours varying by roster pattern and entitlement to payment enhancements.

Requirements

  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Biomedical Scientist.
  • Completion of the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) Specialist Portfolio for Haematology and Blood Transfusion.
  • Proficient and competent in designated laboratory work areas to an agreed standard of expertise.
  • Knowledgeable and skilled in relevant technology and methodologies specific to core and specialist haematology and blood transfusion sections.

Additional Information

From 2021 to 2024, the Partnership underwent a significant transformation integrating all laboratories under a single Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and Quality Management System (QMS), operating across a network comprising a main hub and six essential service laboratories.

The Partnership operates in three divisions: Blood Sciences (including Haematology, Blood Transfusion, and Biochemistry), Microbiology and Virology, and Cellular Pathology and Cancer Diagnostics. The 2024-25 operating budget is approximately £121 million annually with a workforce of around 860 whole-time equivalents.

We uphold our WeCare values and are dedicated to fostering an inclusive work culture where everyone feels valued and supported. We encourage applications from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic individuals to enhance workforce diversity at this position.
