Job description
About the Opportunity
Two permanent Benefits Assessor roles are open within the shared Benefits Service operated by Stafford Borough and Cannock Chase District Councils. Based primarily in Cannock, you may occasionally need to work at other council sites in the Cannock Chase and Stafford Borough areas. This position offers a salary between £25,989 and £28,142 per year (pending pay award) along with a 37-hour work week.
Role Responsibilities
The role involves processing new Housing Benefit and Local Council Tax Support claims, handling changes in claimants' circumstances—whether reported by customers or received automatically—and recovering overpaid benefits. Working accurately and managing workload priorities to meet deadlines is essential within the busy team environment.
Candidate Profile and Requirements
Ideal candidates will possess experience in assessing Housing Benefit and Local Council Tax Reduction claims. Required qualifications include at minimum GCSEs in Mathematics and English at Grade C or equivalent vocational or academic credentials. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to operate both independently and collaboratively, with a commitment to developing in-depth knowledge of Council Tax and Housing Benefits through training.
Additional Information and Terms
Applicants will be subject to a Baseline Personnel Security Standard Check post-appointment, which involves a Basic DBS Disclosure and enhanced identity verification. The councils encourage applicants to inquire about alternative application methods or reasonable adjustments if needed. Closing date for applications is Wednesday 12th August 2026.
