Job description

Role Overview

This position involves extensive training to independently perform detailed fetal echocardiograms in line with the Fetal Anomaly Screening Program and British Congenital Cardiac Association standards. The post holder will join a multidisciplinary fetal cardiology team, including consultants, fellows, clinical nurse specialists, and other echocardiographers, working closely with the Fetal Medicine department.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive fetal echocardiographic scans after receiving training aligned with national guidelines.
  • Engage predominantly in direct clinical and patient-facing activities, supplemented with administrative duties and teaching responsibilities appropriate to the role.
  • Conduct intricate and precise analysis of scan results, communicating findings internally and occasionally to patients and families.
  • Maintain up-to-date digital and paper records, ensuring prompt documentation of own and colleagues' patient information.
  • Provide technical assistance with ultrasound equipment and image review systems, reporting any faults to senior staff.
  • Manage personal training schedule, document echocardiography caseloads for evidence, and participate in self-directed learning, including courses and online resources.
  • Attend departmental training sessions and multidisciplinary pediatric cardiology meetings regularly.

The fetal cardiology unit at Evelina is a leading tertiary referral center delivering antenatal diagnosis and management of congenital heart defects, receiving patients from network hospitals. The sonographer team supports a high patient volume through sonographer-led screening clinics and primary diagnosis in consultant-led clinics. The department fosters a collaborative and supportive environment with shared office and image review spaces. There is a strong partnership with the Fetal Medicine and Pediatric Cardiology teams to ensure continuous expert care.
