Job description
Role overview
Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust is hiring a Band 5 Staff Nurse for Ward 20 at Wexham Park Hospital in Slough. This is a temporary, on-site opportunity within a busy 18-bed female medical ward that cares for patients with both acute and long-term medical conditions.
The ward receives admissions directly from the Emergency Department and other acute routes, so the role involves prompt assessment, treatment support, and continuing care management. A major part of the post is helping patients leave hospital safely through effective discharge planning and coordination.
This position would suit a nurse who wants to strengthen their experience in acute medicine, build confidence in discharge coordination, and deliver holistic, patient-focused care as part of a supportive multidisciplinary team.
Main duties
- Deliver evidence-led nursing care to patients who are acutely unwell.
- Take part in assessing patients, planning care, carrying it out, and reviewing outcomes so treatment remains individualised.
- Support organised and safe discharge arrangements in partnership with the multidisciplinary team and discharge coordinators.
- Give medications safely and in line with hospital procedures.
- Observe patients closely and act quickly when their condition worsens, escalating concerns when needed.
- Keep clinical records accurate, complete, and up to date.
- Work alongside the wider team and help guide junior colleagues, students, and healthcare assistants.
- Support infection control, maintain hygiene standards, and contribute to improving patient experience on the ward.
Requirements and person specification
Applicants should be registered general nurses, with current NMC registration or registration pending. Previous experience on a medical ward is required, and experience using EPIC is also needed. Desirable background includes dementia-related study days or a dementia course, caring for older people with dementia, and experience managing patients with chronic medical conditions.
Strong written and spoken communication skills are essential, along with good interpersonal ability and the confidence to handle difficult or stressful situations. The role also calls for the ability to prioritise tasks for yourself and others, meet deadlines, and support the training and supervision of junior staff.
You must be prepared to work in other areas of the department when needed and be available for flexible shift patterns, including weekends and bank holidays.
