Job description
Role overview
The North Central London and Hertfordshire Operational Delivery Network (ODN) delivers community liver disease services across the region. This post is focused on making sure patients complete the required tests, assessments, and ongoing monitoring within the community services they already use, helping them move smoothly through the viral hepatitis and liver health pathway.
The services involved include drug and alcohol programmes, homeless hostels, and GP practices. The role also involves assessing liver disease in these settings and ensuring that patients with cirrhosis are connected to specialist care. Early specialist involvement is especially important for identifying complications of cirrhosis, including liver cancer, at a stage when treatment may still be possible.
What you will do
You will need to understand the care pathways for both alcohol-related and viral hepatitis-related cirrhosis across the network, and build strong working relationships with a wide range of colleagues to keep communication with patients clear and consistent.
This is mainly a community-based position, although regular meetings will take place at the NCL ODN Hub at the Royal Free Hospital. You will work as part of a wider ODN team that includes two other clinician assistants, clinical nurse specialists, peer support workers, doctors, blood-borne virus nurses, drug and alcohol service staff, and pathway coordinators.
The post requires sound judgement in prioritising work and the ability to develop practical clinical skills. These include patient assessment using multiple testing methods, taking blood for additional investigations, and carrying out elastography to help evaluate liver disease.
To build and maintain these technical abilities, you will also take part in fibroscan clinics for general hepatology at the Royal Free.
Location and travel
You will be based at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, but the role involves travel throughout North Central London and Hertfordshire, including East Hertfordshire, West Hertfordshire, North Hertfordshire, Barnet, Haringey, Enfield, Camden, and Islington. Access to a dedicated car and a van fitted with clinical examination and testing equipment is part of the role. A full UK driving licence is essential and must be shown with your application.
