Job description
Role overview
The Associate University Librarian for Public Services oversees the Library’s public-facing services and day-to-day operations so they align with the Library’s mission and objectives. Reporting to the University Librarian, this position helps shape service delivery, contributes to library-wide planning and policy work, and evaluates the effectiveness of services. Core areas include information literacy, reference and instruction, access services, library promotion and outreach, and scholarly communication. The role also partners with the Associate University Librarian for Technology and Technical Services to ensure the AUS community receives integrated and high-quality library support.
Key responsibilities
- Direct a team of public services librarians and staff, while identifying and implementing new tools and resources that support the Library’s strategic direction.
- Oversee information literacy and instruction, collection development, circulation and reserves, learning assessment, outreach, and liaison activity.
- Plan, launch, and continuously improve essential public service functions.
- Manage recruitment, onboarding, supervision, training, and development for Public Services librarians and library staff.
- Contribute to space planning and facilities oversight, ensuring library areas remain inclusive, accessible, and welcoming.
- Represent the Library on internal and campus committees and step in for the University Librarian when needed.
- Build and sustain professional relationships with regional and international partners, and share effective practices across the sector.
Qualifications
- A master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution, or an equivalent qualification.
Experience and skills
- At least five years of recent, progressively responsible experience in an academic library.
- Proven leadership capability, including policy creation and rollout, staff management, and training/development.
- Strong verbal, written, and presentation skills.
- Good understanding of higher education trends and the challenges faced by academic libraries.
- A strong service mindset and commitment to user support.
- Ability to work on own initiative, operate independently, and meet deadlines.
- Ongoing commitment to personal professional growth and to supporting development in others.
- Comfort using MS Word, Excel, indexing and abstracting databases, Current Research Information Systems, and presentation or data-visualization tools.
