Introduction
This position as Assistant Superintendent Residential Facility I within the Department of Juvenile Services represents a managerial role responsible for supervising the daily administration and overall operations of a sizable juvenile facility. Those appointed serve at the discretion of the appointing authority.

Location and Grade
Grade 19, based at the Lower Eastern Shore Children's Center, 405 Naylor Mill Road, Salisbury, MD 21801.
Main Duties
The Assistant Superintendent acts as the primary managerial deputy to the Facility Superintendent, overseeing the entire facility or multiple facilities during the Superintendent's absence. This role involves managing staff who serve resident youth through subordinate supervisors. The position may require working evenings, weekends, holidays, and being available for call-in in emergencies or staffing shortages.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED accepted by the Maryland State Board of Education as per Correctional Training Commission Regulation.
- Minimum two years supervising staff in a juvenile facility or community program for at-risk youth.
- Educational substitutes: An Associate degree in Criminal Justice or social/behavioral sciences counts as one year experience; a Bachelor's degree in these fields counts as two years experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Flexibility to work evening hours.
- Skills in teaching, training, and building effective teams within the facility.
- Strong knowledge of safety and security protocols.
- Ability to prioritize workflow and meet deadlines to implement operational systems.
- A Bachelor's degree in social or behavioral sciences or criminal justice from an accredited college is preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
- Certification by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission is mandatory.
- Employees may be required to operate a motor vehicle and must hold a valid Maryland driver’s license accordingly.
- Completion and passing of the Entrance Level Correctional Training Course within 365 days of appointment is required and must be maintained.
Selection and Examination Process
