Role Purpose

The Assistant Manager - Safety Officer is expected to support and coordinate airside activities so that airport operations remain safe, compliant, and efficient. The position involves managing aircraft movements, working closely with pilots and ground teams, keeping safety standards in check, monitoring ground support equipment, and responding effectively to operational emergencies.

Key Responsibilities

Aircraft movement coordination, ground support equipment readiness, safety compliance, emergency preparedness, runway and taxiway upkeep, and control of airside vehicle and personnel movement are the core parts of this role.

Aircraft Movement Coordination

  • Guide aircraft between gates, taxiways, and runways while ensuring instructions from air traffic control are followed wherever required.
  • Track aircraft positions, maintain clear communication with pilots and ground staff, and quickly resolve operational issues to keep traffic flowing smoothly.

Ground Support Equipment Management

  • Make sure ground support equipment stays in proper working order by coordinating routine maintenance.
  • Check that equipment such as tugs, baggage carts, and refuelling vehicles remains roadworthy and available to support aircraft operations without delay.

Safety Compliance

  • Carry out regular safety checks, enforce safety procedures, and train staff on safe working practices.
  • Watch airside operations for hazards and take immediate corrective action to maintain a secure operating environment.

Emergency Response Coordination

  • Prepare and implement emergency response plans, organise drills, and maintain strong communication with emergency services.
  • Support evacuation processes and assist impacted individuals to reduce the effect of any emergency situation.

Runway and Taxiway Maintenance

  • Plan periodic inspections, arrange repairs, and oversee the clearing of debris or other hazards from runways and taxiways.
  • Work with maintenance teams to ensure surfaces remain in good condition and continue to meet required safety standards.

Traffic Management

  • Oversee the movement of vehicles and personnel on the airside to reduce collision risk and support efficient traffic flow.

Stakeholder Interface

This position interacts with internal teams such as the Duty Manager - Airside Operations, Air Traffic Control, ground handling teams, terminal operations, facilities, airport security, maintenance and engineering, customer service, IT, safety and compliance, and marketing and communications. External coordination may involve airlines, regulatory authorities such as FAA and ICAO, ground handling providers, ATC, local emergency services, passengers, cargo operators, fuel suppliers, vendors, and contractors.

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in aviation management, airport operations, or another related discipline is required. Relevant certifications include Airport Operations Management Certification and Ground Handling Certification. The role calls for 3 to 4 years of experience in airport operations or ground handling.
