Job description
Position Overview
We are seeking an Assistant Director of Purchasing to join a leading engineered modular systems and industrial manufacturing company located near downtown Houston, TX. This full-time, onsite role reports directly to the Director of Purchasing and is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the Purchasing department. The position oversees Purchasing Managers and Strategic Sourcing Managers and ensures timely procurement of materials essential for complex, engineer-to-order projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor Purchasing and Strategic Sourcing Managers to cultivate a high-performing team.
- Monitor supplier delivery performance, inventory levels, cost management, and operational key performance indicators to drive procurement effectiveness.
- Support strategic sourcing activities including supplier qualification, risk management, and developing long-term supplier relationships.
- Collaborate with cross-functional departments such as Engineering, Manufacturing, Planning, Project Management, Operations, and Finance to ensure material availability for custom-built equipment.
- Address and resolve critical issues related to supplier performance, delivery, quality, and commercial matters while maintaining production schedules.
- Promote effective utilization of ERP/MRP systems, ensure accuracy in reporting, and foster continuous process improvements.
- Develop and refine purchasing policies, establish standard operating procedures, and lead team training initiatives.
- Support cost reduction efforts while maintaining quality, delivery timelines, and optimizing total cost of ownership.
- Ensure adherence to company policies, quality standards, and ISO regulations.
- Act as the department leader in the absence of the Director.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field.
- At least 7 years of experience in purchasing, procurement, or supply chain roles within the manufacturing sector.
- Minimum of 5 years in leadership roles managing purchasing or supply chain teams.
- Experience supporting engineer-to-order (ETO) or make-to-order (MTO) manufacturing environments.
- Strong proficiency with ERP/MRP systems and purchasing analytics.
- Proven track record in establishing supplier partnerships and leading cross-functional projects.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Background in heavy industrial equipment, power generation, process equipment, or modular manufacturing.
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Experience working within ISO-regulated manufacturing environments.
- Certifications such as APICS, CPSM, or CPM.
