Role Summary

The Assistant Director of Engineering supports the head of department in managing budgets, capital projects, maintenance schedules, and energy conservation efforts. This role ensures building and ground safety, security, and asset protection while overseeing staff and contractor work assignments. The position also focuses on enhancing guest and employee satisfaction through effective communication and training.

Primary Responsibilities

• Assist with planning, scheduling, and assessment of preventative maintenance programs.
• Help set priorities for comprehensive property maintenance requirements.
• Oversee daily engineering operations and supervise engineering team activities.
• Manage physical plant systems including refrigeration, HVAC, plumbing, water treatment, electrical and life safety systems.
• Maintain operating efficiency, safety, and effectiveness of all equipment.
• Coordinate and supervise the distribution and completion of repair work orders.
• Support the maintenance of grounds, meeting rooms, public spaces, restaurants, vehicles, and recreational facilities.
• Serve as technical liaison across hotel departments.
• Act as engineering lead in the absence of Director of Engineering.
• Recommend and facilitate additional services such as painting, repairs, renovations, and replacement of furnishings.
• Select and acquire new equipment, supplies, and furniture.
• Inspect and assess facility conditions to determine maintenance needs.
• Manage inventory of parts, supplies, and equipment to reduce downtime and optimize cash flow.
• Perform inspections and evaluate new technologies, equipment, and supplies.
• Assist in establishing and executing an energy conservation program.

Standards and Compliance

• Ensure acquisition and renewal of all required permits and licenses for buildings and physical plants.
• Maintain adherence to facility regulations and safety standards.
• Enforce departmental policies, standards, and procedures within Engineering.
• Provide employees with proper equipment, uniforms, and supplies.

Customer Service and Human Resources

• Exhibit leadership in guest services to foster a positive atmosphere and encourage exemplary hospitality.
• Engage with guests to gather feedback on services and product quality.
• Empower staff to deliver outstanding customer service.
• Manage staffing to meet guest service, operational, and budget goals.
• Support employee training in safety, fire protection, and evacuation procedures.
• Provide performance feedback based on service observations.

Candidate Profile and Requirements

• Minimum high school diploma or GED with four years experience in engineering, maintenance, or related field plus technical training in HVAC-R, electrical, or plumbing;
• OR a two-year degree in Building and Construction, Engineering, Mechanics, or related discipline with two years relevant experience and technical training in HVAC-R, electrical, or plumbing.
