Job description

Position Overview

California State University, Bakersfield is searching for an Assistant Director of Athletic Communications to join its NCAA Division I Athletics Communications Office. This role functions as the primary media relations contact for designated sports, handling website and social media management, statistical reporting, event operations, and digital content development. The position demands producing written and digital materials, managing athletics records and web content, coordinating media interactions, and assisting with live events, while adhering to NCAA, conference, and university regulations. Evening, weekend work, and occasional travel aligned with the athletics schedule are required.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the lead communications liaison for specific sports teams.
  • Oversee media relations and foster relationships with press and media outlets.
  • Manage athletics website content and social media platforms effectively.
  • Produce and distribute written communications including press releases, game recaps, and feature stories.
  • Coordinate statistical reporting and manage sports records.
  • Support live game-day operations and ensure smooth event execution.
  • Maintain compliance with NCAA rules, conference policies, and university standards in all communications activities.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a related field.
  • General understanding of media relations, public affairs, and sports information.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication capabilities.
  • Proficiency in creating and managing content across digital, web, and social media channels.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to juggle multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Competence with Microsoft Office and willingness to learn institutional athletics communication tools and software.
  • Flexibility to work during evenings, weekends, and travel with sports teams as necessary.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid driver's license by the hire date.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in collegiate or professional athletics communications, especially within NCAA Division I.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud, Genius NCAA Live Stats, StatCrew software, Microsoft Office Suite, and SIDEARM Sports or comparable content management systems.
  • Skilled in writing press releases, feature articles, and game summaries adhering to AP Style guidelines.
  • In-depth knowledge of NCAA regulations, conference policies, and best practices in athletic communications.

Additional Information

The anticipated salary range for this full-time position is $4570 to $4850 per month, dependent on experience, education, skills, and training. A comprehensive benefits package through the CSU system is included.
