Job description

Role overview

As an Assistant Designer in menswear, you’ll partner closely with Primark’s Buying and Merchandising teams to turn fashion trends into product ranges. Working with a Designer and wider product design teams, you’ll help build strong, commercially focused collections that reflect the Primark brand across global markets.

This role calls for genuine enthusiasm for fashion, curiosity, and an eye for what’s next. You’ll help identify key trends using best-seller insight, research, and forecasting tools, while also supporting the development process through practical technical work and strong knowledge of design tools, product quality, and specifications.

What you’ll do

  • Research emerging fashion movements and convert them into commercially relevant ideas for Primark’s ranges.
  • Support the Designer in creating trend-led product assortments that balance creativity with commercial performance.
  • Work with Designers, Buyers, and Merchandisers to keep the creative direction aligned with the wider brand strategy.
  • Keep design updates on track, manage critical path timing, and prepare trend and design materials for presentations and supplier discussions.
  • Review how previous ranges performed with Buying and Merchandising teams to guide future design choices.
  • Stay commercially aware by understanding pricing pressures, competitor activity, and the impact of trends on sales and profitability.
  • Contribute to range-building meetings and help progress product development through focused technical tasks.
  • Represent your product area in working groups and forums across departments.

Skills and experience needed

  • At least 2 years of experience in a Trainee Designer or Assistant Designer position.
  • Strong understanding of fashion design principles and product development.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
  • Ability to think commercially and show real interest in retail.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organisation, and planning ability.
  • Confident communication skills and a collaborative, positive approach.
  • Creativity and the ability to work well in a fast-moving environment.
  • Degree in fashion design or equivalent hands-on experience.
