About the Role

Macy’s is looking for an Assistant Designer to join the Home Design team in New York. This is an entry point into the design function, where you will build knowledge of the company’s culture, brand standards, and design direction while contributing to product development. The role is ideal for someone who wants to grow as a designer, work collaboratively, and help bring original product ideas to life in a team-oriented environment.

What You’ll Do

  • Build knowledge of category research, market trends, and customer preferences.
  • Support the design team in translating the private brand direction into work involving materials, trims, silhouettes, color palettes, and patterns.
  • Help execute the broader product vision with a customer-focused approach that supports merchandising goals and overall assortment strategy.
  • Prepare presentation materials and set up meetings led by the design team.
  • Contribute to seasonal design updates for the department and vendors.
  • Take part in cross-functional meetings and help document key actions for the manager.
  • Work closely with the people leader to stay aligned on deadlines, priorities, and workload expectations.
  • Assist in producing flat mechanical sketches for development packages.
  • Help create and distribute technical packages.
  • Support approval of strike-offs, samples, and other development materials.
  • Learn to use Adobe and CLO tools for style, color, and pattern work.
  • Review samples and share feedback during development.
  • Build relationships and maintain regular communication with partners across functions throughout the product development process.
  • Learn how to spot assortment opportunities and contribute to assortment building.
  • Work collaboratively, deliver results, and show interest in growing a long-term career with Macy’s.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a related field is preferred.
  • Retail or design internship experience is preferred.
  • You should be comfortable using office and computer systems to read, review, and manage written and electronic information.
  • The role requires the ability to move around the work environment and interact with materials as needed to complete job duties.
  • A flexible schedule is required based on business and department needs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are important.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Excel, and Adobe design tools is expected.
  • Working knowledge of PLM is considered an advantage.
  • A good sense of color and print, including the ability to distinguish colors accurately, is important.
