Job description
Role overview
An Army Recruit joins the Defence Forces for General Service and, after finishing the initial training programme, is commissioned into the role of Private 2*. Once recruit training is completed, there are several possible career pathways across the different Corps.
What the role involves
This is a demanding military career suited to people who want variety, structure and the opportunity to serve. The Defence Forces is seeking candidates who are ready for a challenging environment and who can operate effectively as part of a close-knit team.
Candidate profile
- Comfortable working in a disciplined military setting.
- Able to contribute positively in team-based situations.
- Capable of performing under pressure in physically demanding conditions.
- Prepared to serve overseas when required.
Eligibility and entry requirements
- Applicants must be between 18 and 39 years of age. Proof of age will be required if you advance in the selection process.
- A minimum height of 5 ft 2 in (157.48 cm) is required, and height will be checked during selection.
- No tattoos may be visible above the collar while serving; visible tattoos in this area can prevent progression in the process.
- Candidates must satisfy the working permit rules needed to serve with the Defence Forces, including at least 5 years' eligibility to remain in Ireland. Evidence of this permission will be requested.
- Medical, physical and security clearance standards must all be met as part of recruitment.
Training and posting
Successful recruits complete 12 weeks of basic recruit training followed by a 12-week 3-star training course. Additional specialist or career courses may be available depending on the Corps assigned.
Training may take place at any Defence Forces location, and after training you can be posted to any Defence Forces site. The organisation will try to place recruits in a preferred unit where possible, subject to operational needs. Postings will be within the Brigade applied to: 1 Bde, 2 Bde or DFTC.
After qualifying, recruits become three-star privates in one of the following Corps: Infantry, Artillery, Cavalry, Transport or Communications Information Systems, Engineers, Ordnance, Military Police, or Medical Corps.
Career development
Newly qualified Private Soldiers are encouraged to apply for further Army courses, which can lead to specialisation, promotion opportunities and overseas service.
Locations
Barrack locations include Cork, Dublin, Donegal, Galway, Kildare, Kilkenny, Limerick, Louth, Meath and Westmeath.
