Role Overview
The Aquatics Quarantine Technician is charged with ensuring the health and safety of aquatic livestock within the facility's quarantine environment. This role entails regular maintenance of aquarium systems and strict implementation of husbandry standards to guarantee the safe transition of aquatic animals through quarantine.
Expertise in biosecurity procedures is crucial, along with practical skills in caring for aquatic life and the capacity to detect potential diseases or health issues. The position contributes significantly to preserving livestock well-being, maintaining system functionality, and upholding quarantine quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and care for quarantine tanks, maintaining optimal water conditions specific to each livestock species.
- Carry out routine water replacements, conduct frequent water quality checks, and keep tanks clean daily.
- Monitor aquatic animals for signs of illness and promptly alert the quarantine specialist to any concerns.
- Administer medications and treatments as directed by the quarantine specialist with precision and care.
- Document all treatments, water maintenance activities, and report any fish mortalities accurately.
- Maintain all quarantine equipment by ensuring thorough cleaning and disinfection; report any need for replacements.
- Receive new shipments of aquatic livestock, properly acclimate animals, and record any dead on arrival (DOA) incidents.
- Prepare fish for transfer to retail aquatic stores by ensuring appropriate oxygenation in transport bags and secure sealing.
- Support retail staff as needed by providing guidance and assistance related to aquatic livestock.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Completion of high school or equivalent educational certification.
- Minimum of two years' experience within the aquarium, aquaculture, or closely related fields.
- Proficient understanding of aquarium setups, individual equipment operations, and water quality management.
- Familiarity with diseases affecting both freshwater and marine species, their symptoms, and treatment options.
- Strong observational abilities and detailed reporting skills.
- Comprehensive knowledge of biosecurity measures and maintenance of a clean, disinfected quarantine zone.
- Capability to work collaboratively within a team and remain composed in high-pressure scenarios.
- Fluency in English is mandatory.
- Exceptional expertise in aquatic husbandry techniques.
