Job description
Role overview
This contract position is for an experienced Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Subject Matter Expert based in Toronto, Ontario. The role requires working onsite four days per week and attending a face-to-face interview onsite only. The pay rate is CAD 70 to 80 per hour, inclusive.
What you will do
- Serve as the AML specialist for exchange-traded fund (ETF) products, making sure controls and practices align with global AML/CTF requirements such as FINTRAC, FATF, SEC, and FCA expectations.
- Advise on Know Your Customer (KYC), Customer Due Diligence (CDD), and Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) processes for ETF and institutional client relationships.
- Contribute to AML risk assessments covering fund movements, trading behaviour, and investor structures.
- Spot, investigate, and escalate suspicious activity, unusual patterns, and red flags tied to ETF trading, subscriptions, and redemptions.
- Work closely with Compliance, Legal, and Risk partners to strengthen adherence to AML policies and regulatory obligations.
ETF domain knowledge
- Apply strong knowledge of the ETF lifecycle, including creation and redemption, authorised participants, and market makers.
- Review ETF transaction flows and liquidity trends to identify possible financial crime risks.
- Support onboarding and ongoing monitoring of institutional clients, brokers, and intermediaries involved in ETF activity.
Monitoring and investigations
- Lead or assist with transaction monitoring and alert investigations connected to ETF transactions.
- Help design and improve AML scenarios, rules, and typologies for capital markets and ETF activity.
- Carry out complex investigations and prepare Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) and Suspicious Transaction Reports (STRs).
Stakeholder collaboration
- Partner with technology teams to improve AML platforms and surveillance capabilities.
- Coordinate with front office, middle office, and operations teams to strengthen AML controls.
- Provide coaching and guidance to internal teams on ETF-specific AML practices.
Regulatory and audit support
- Assist with regulatory examinations, audits, and compliance reviews.
- Keep current on AML rules, ETF regulatory developments, and emerging risk themes.
- Help update AML policies, procedures, and control frameworks.

The interview process is onsite only. The employer has also noted that AI tools may be used in recruitment support, but final hiring decisions are made by the recruitment team after a full evaluation of candidates.
Required background
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Law, or a related discipline.
- At least 7 years of experience in AML compliance within capital markets or asset management.
- Hands-on experience with ETF products or other exchange-traded instruments.
- Strong working knowledge of AML/CTF regulations, including FINTRAC, FATF, and other global frameworks.
- Practical experience with KYC, CDD, and EDD processes.
- Exposure to trade surveillance and transaction monitoring systems.
- Experience handling AML investigations and filing SAR/STR reports.
- Professional credentials such as CAMS or CFA are preferred, or an equivalent certification.
Preferred capabilities
- Experience using AML platforms such as Actimize, Fircosoft, or SAS AML.
- Understanding of market abuse, insider trading, and financial crime risks in ETF markets.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving ability.
- Ability to convert regulatory requirements into workable controls and system enhancements.
