Position Overview
The Ambulatory Nurse Triage (RN) role at Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute's Access Center involves managing a high volume of patient calls to address urgent and non-emergent health concerns under supervision of the Nurse Manager or Practice Manager. This role supports care delivery through assessment, communication, and coordination, and includes a flexible work model that begins onsite with options for remote work after a designated period.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess and triage urgent and non-emergency patient calls, providing thorough nursing evaluations using the nursing process and Schmitt-Thompson protocols.
- Communicate and coordinate care with specialty providers or their delegates, ensuring appropriate patient management.
- Offer clear guidance for acute interventions to stable and unstable patients telephonically.
- Document all call encounters strictly following Orlando Health policies and procedures.
- Use interpersonal skills to reassure callers and efficiently handle high call volumes in a fast-paced environment.
- Execute multiple software programs proficiently as part of patient care coordination.
- Identify changes in patient condition requiring escalation and coordinate with providers or nursing leaders accordingly.
- Schedule patients for same-day or next-day appointments as appropriate based on clinical dispositions.
- Refill prescriptions in compliance with provider guidelines and Orlando Health protocols.
- Ensure patients understand their care plans before completing each call and update MyChart information as needed.
- Maintain punctual attendance, adhere to break schedules, and meet weekend and holiday work commitments per organizational policy.
- Serve as a patient advocate, upholding ethical decision-making to promote positive health outcomes.
- Support and mentor new staff by modeling professionalism and flexibility during training schedules.
- Operate independently with minimal supervision while contributing to department meetings, committees, and projects.
- Comply fully with Orlando Health policies and enhance professional development through continuing education and license maintenance.
- Deliver excellent customer service by actively listening and responding calmly to patient inquiries and stressful situations.
Qualifications
- Graduated from an accredited school of nursing.
- Possess three years of clinical experience within a specialty area or five years spanning multiple specialties/service lines.
- Current Registered Nurse license valid in the State of Florida.
- Maintain active Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Prior experience using EPIC Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system.
