Job description

Role overview

South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust is hiring Dispatchers for its Emergency Operations Centre. Successful candidates will become part of the 999 control room team, supporting the efficient allocation and oversight of Trust vehicles for both emergency and non-emergency incidents across the Trust area.

This opportunity is based in Bristol, and part-time working may be considered through the flexible working process.

Shortlisted applicants will be asked to attend an assessment centre. The service operates around the clock, every day of the year, so the post involves shift work. An example shift pattern is available in the additional information.

Working arrangements and pay

Unsocial hours pay will be applied in line with Section 2 of NHS Terms and Conditions, with reference to the A4C Handbook.

The position is part of a 24/7 rota covering weekends, nights, and bank holidays.

The standard working week is 37.5 hours.

What you need to bring

The trust is looking for someone who can stay composed in pressured situations, communicate clearly, and use tact and diplomacy when needed. Strong keyboard ability is also important.

Applicants should have 4 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English, or an equivalent qualification.

What the trust offers

Starting pay is £27,485, with unsocial hours enhancements in accordance with NHS Agenda for Change terms.

Benefits include the NHS Pension Scheme, 27 days of annual leave plus extra bank holiday leave, access to the trust Staying Well service for emotional support and counselling, and strong opportunities to progress within the Clinical Hub and the wider organisation.

Further benefits include a competitive NHS salary, pay enhancements for out-of-hours, shift, and overtime work, career and salary progression, a car leasing scheme, free parking at Trust sites, staff networks, and discounts from a wide range of UK organisations.

About the organisation

South Western Ambulance Service provides emergency and urgent care every hour of the day throughout the year, operating across the largest ambulance region in England and handling an average of 2,650 incidents each day.

The organisation is focused on continuously improving patient care through its five-year strategy and values teamwork, compassion, and innovation.

Working from Bristol offers a vibrant city setting with excellent shopping, food, events, festivals, and strong transport connections.

Additional information

The employer is building a holding pool for upcoming course intakes.

Candidates who fit the trust values and want to make a meaningful difference to people’s lives are encouraged to apply.
