About The Role

This permanent full-time position is based at Glenroy and Fawkner Libraries, designated specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants under the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 Special Measures provision. The Adult / Information Services Librarian is charged with coordinating book clubs, reader development initiatives, and local history presentations, along with managing adult collection acquisitions including e-resources. The role also involves curating items for the ganbo marra and Local Studies collections and overseeing staff and students during their placements. Culturally safe programming tailored to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities is a priority, alongside the maintenance and preservation of local historical materials.

Key Responsibilities

  • Organize and run reader programs and local history talks to engage the community.
  • Acquire, promote, and manage adult collections and resources, including digital content.
  • Develop and maintain special collections focusing on ganbo marra and local studies.
  • Supervise library staff and support students during work placements.
  • Deliver culturally respectful services and programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patrons.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Strong teamwork, communication, and supervisory capabilities.
  • Creativity and originality in problem-solving and conflict resolution.
  • Project management skills including planning, executing, and reviewing community initiatives.
  • Leadership qualities to motivate and coach team members effectively.
  • Proven experience in developing community-oriented programs and managing information collections.
  • Customer service expertise in a library or related environment.
  • Eligibility for membership in the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).
  • Awareness of child safety principles applicable to the library setting and possession of a current Working with Children Check.
