Overview

The Central Otago District Council is inviting applications for a leadership role within their Building Control team based in Alexandra, Otago, New Zealand. This permanent, full-time role offers the opportunity to lead a dedicated team responsible for delivering high-quality building control services that ensure safety and regulatory compliance according to the Building Act 2004.

Key Duties

  • Oversee daily coordination and mentor staff within the Building Control team.
  • Support the Regulatory Services Manager in meeting compliance standards and team performance objectives.
  • Encourage process efficiency, innovate practices, and prioritize customer-centric approaches throughout Building Control activities.
  • Contribute actively to accreditation efforts and foster continuous enhancements in systems, processes, and workforce capabilities.
  • Uphold and promote Council’s health and safety policies, fostering a workplace culture centered on wellbeing and mutual respect.

Required Expertise and Background

  • Possession of a professional building qualification as defined by Regulation 18 of the Building (Accreditation of Building Consent Authorities) Regulations 2006.
  • Minimum of ten years’ experience in building control, covering Residential 1–3 and Commercial 1–2 consent processing and inspection competencies.
  • Deep understanding of the Building Act 2004, NZ Building Code, and pertinent local government legislation.
  • Demonstrated strengths in leadership, mentoring, and resolving disputes, with an ability to nurture team development.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, including report writing and engaging with customers.
  • Proficiency in computer skills and experience with digital consenting platforms.
  • A proactive approach oriented towards problem solving and continuous improvement.
  • Valid New Zealand driver's license.
