Rig Operator

General Overview

The Rig Operator is entrusted with the operation, upkeep, and management of drilling rigs and related machinery to execute borehole installations and geotechnical or exploration drilling. This role requires ensuring drilling activities are conducted safely, efficiently, and meet project requirements and environmental standards.

Core Duties

• Operate and manage different drilling rigs (such as rotary, percussion, auger, diamond core, sonic, or directional) to bore holes to desired depths and specifications.
• Specifically handle Klemm (like KR 702, KR 806) and Kubota drill rigs for drilling, sampling, and installation tasks aligned with project objectives.
• Monitor key drilling performance metrics including penetration rates, torque, and pressure for optimal operation.
• Prepare, position, and secure rig equipment prior to drilling.
• Adapt drilling methods and equipment based on soil and project specifics.
• Install and withdraw casings, drill rods, and core barrels as necessary.

Equipment Maintenance and Safety

• Perform daily checks, inspections, and maintenance on rigs, compressors, pumps, and support vehicles.
• Identify and promptly report machinery faults or safety issues.
• Maintain a tidy and organized area around the rig.
• Strictly follow safety protocols including lock-out/tag-out and confined space entry guidelines.
• Engage proactively in safety meetings and hazard evaluations.

Sampling and Documentation

• Collect soil, core, or rock samples adhering to quality and technical standards.
• Accurately document drilling logs, depths, lithology, and water strikes.

Site Preparation and Support

• Assist in rig mobilization, demobilization, and site transport.
• Operate ancillary machines such as forklifts, water trucks, and excavators as necessary.
• Manage drill waste and fluids per environmental guidelines.

Team Collaboration and Communication

• Collaborate effectively with assistants, mechanics, supervisors, and safety officers.
• Communicate progress, issues, and conditions to site leadership and clients.
• Mentor and train less experienced personnel on operational and safety practices.

Qualifications and Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent; technical or trade certification favored.
• Between 2 to 5 years of relevant drilling experience in geotechnical, mineral exploration, or water well drilling projects.
• Valid Drill Rig Operator’s license or certification where applicable.
• Understanding of drilling fluids, downhole tools, and rig hydraulics.
• Basic mechanical skills with troubleshooting capability.
• Current First Aid/CPR or equivalent safety certification.
• Valid driver's license, with heavy vehicle endorsement preferred.
• Familiarity with ground conditions, drilling methods, and sampling standards such as BS 5930, ASTM, and AS 1726.
• Strong technical aptitude and attention to detail in data logging.
• Capability to work extended hours in remote or challenging environments.
