Firefighter/EMT

Overview

The City of Kodiak is currently seeking candidates for full-time Firefighter/EMT roles within its Fire Department, committed to safeguarding lives and supporting the local community.

Role Responsibilities

• Respond promptly to emergencies including medical incidents, fires, rescue operations, hazardous materials alerts, and community service calls.
• Operate and maintain firefighting and emergency medical vehicles, apparatus, and related equipment efficiently.
• Carry out all aspects of fire suppression activities to protect people and property.
• Provide emergency medical aid and critical lifesaving support during incidents.
• Engage in fire prevention initiatives and public education efforts to enhance community safety.
• Participate actively in training programs focused on firefighting, fire prevention, public awareness, and emergency medical services.

Department Role

The department offers comprehensive fire protection and prevention services throughout the City, as well as emergency medical and ambulance services efficiently covering the area. Firefighter/EMTs serve both individually and collaboratively in delivering these essential services, maintaining a professional image that positively reflects on the City and the Fire Department.

Minimum Qualifications

• Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
• Residence within 12 road miles of the fire station and availability of telephone service are mandatory.
• Educational and certification requirements vary by level:
  • Firefighter/EMT I: High school diploma or GED, Firefighter I Certification, and Alaska EMT I Certification.
  • Firefighter/EMT II: High school diploma or GED, up to one year of post-secondary specialized or technical training, Firefighter I Certification, and Alaska EMT II Certification.
  • Firefighter/EMT III: High school diploma or GED, up to one year of post-secondary specialized training, minimum one year fire experience, Firefighter I Certification, and Alaska EMT III Certification.
• Must successfully complete the Fire Department fitness test, medical examination, and pulmonary function assessment.

Compensation

• Hourly salaries are tiered based upon certification level:
• Firefighter/EMT I: $23.91 per hour
• Firefighter/EMT II: $25.00 per hour
• Firefighter/EMT III: $26.09 per hour
