Position Overview

The City of Kodiak is looking to fill a full-time Fire Captain role within its Fire Department that is committed to safeguarding lives and serving the local community. Reporting under general supervision, the Fire Captain undertakes administrative, supervisory, and technical tasks including planning, coordinating, directing, and participating in diverse activities ranging from fire suppression, emergency medical response, hazardous material handling, rescue operations, fire prevention and inspection, to public education and maintenance of vehicles, equipment, and facilities. This role ensures all duties are executed effectively, safely, and align with department policies and standards.

Department Scope

The Fire Department manages comprehensive fire protection and prevention services citywide and also extends emergency medical and ambulance services across the region efficiently and cost-effectively. The Fire Captain operates independently and collaboratively to deliver fire protection, emergency medical aid, and related services with professionalism that positively reflects the City and Department.

Qualifications

Candidates must possess at least a high school diploma or GED, reside within 12 road miles of the fire station, and have telephone access. A minimum of three to five years of firefighting experience including two years in a supervisory or progressively responsible role is required. Preference is given to those with an associate degree or two-year technical certificate in fire science, EMS, or related fields, or equivalent education and experience demonstrating capability to perform essential duties.

  • State of Alaska EMT III or higher certification
  • FEMA incidents system certifications IS-700, IS-800, ICS 100, and ICS 200
