The Ontario Energy Board (OEB) is seeking Commissioners to lead this transformation by making decisions impacting millions of consumers, businesses, and communities across Ontario. Role Overview

Ontario requires major energy investments to accommodate growth and ensure a reliable energy system. The OEB ensures these investments are responsible, provide value, and maintain fair pricing for electricity and natural gas customers. Commissioners play a central role in these efforts by approving major infrastructure projects and setting utility rates through independent and evidence-based adjudicative proceedings.

Commissioners assess applications via written, oral, or electronic hearings applying analytical rigor, sound judgment, and impartiality to complex public-interest issues, balancing affordability, reliability, economic development, and the public good.

Impact and Responsibilities

• Deliver clear, timely, and high-quality adjudicative decisions aligned with statutory and administrative law requirements and principles of natural justice.
• Conduct hearings and decide substantive and procedural matters across various formats—written, oral, electronic.
• Analyze complex evidence and stakeholder inputs objectively with transparent reasoning.
• Collaborate effectively with other Commissioners, preside over hearings when assigned, and support process improvements.
• Promote innovation, efficiency, and continuous advancements in adjudicative and regulatory procedures.
• Maintain independence, impartiality, accountability, transparency, fairness, and public trust in all actions.

Candidate Profile and Skills

Successful candidates exhibit intellectual curiosity, independence, and impartiality, thriving in examining intricate evidence and competing perspectives. They uphold integrity and public service commitment and make fair, well-reasoned decisions for the public interest.

• Experience in law, adjudication, administrative tribunals, or quasi-judicial decision-making.
• Expertise in accounting, economics, finance, engineering, public policy, regulation, or complex evidence analysis.
• Senior leadership background in public, private, regulatory, infrastructure, or professional service settings.
• Proficiency in interpreting legislation, regulations, policy frameworks, financial and technical evidence, and stakeholder interests fairly and consistently.
• Strong decision-writing ability with clear analysis, objective reasoning, and practical judgment.
• Financial literacy and comfort handling economic, accounting, infrastructure, rate-setting, or business-related evidence.
• Excellent communication, preparation, and workload management capabilities, and effectiveness in multidisciplinary teams.
• Capacity for transparent reasoning and making prompt decisions under pressure.

Work Location and Terms

The OEB headquarters is in Toronto, Ontario. Candidates must reside and work primarily within Ontario to meet tax, employment, and cybersecurity compliance. Hearings may occur virtually, hybrid, or in-person (mostly in Toronto).

The position provides an annual salary of $215,000, along with benefits and reimbursed expenses per OEB policies.

Appointments are authorized by the OEB Board of Directors under the Ontario Energy Board Act, 1998.
