About the Role
We are seeking a full-time AI Engineer based in Toronto, specializing in backend development to join our team. This position focuses on developing and maintaining the backend infrastructure for SMS-based AI agents designed to streamline various insurance workflows, including quoting, underwriting, claims, renewals, and policy servicing.
Job Overview
Insurance software has traditionally relied on inflexible forms, portals, and call centers, which often result in cumbersome experiences for customers and inefficient operations for teams. Despite advancements in AI, many insurance processes remain manual and fragmented across different systems.
At our company, we are pioneering AI agents that operate directly through SMS, enabling smooth and real-time interactions across insurance tasks such as quoting, follow-ups, document collection, verification, claims processing, and broker communications. These AI agents integrate seamlessly with carrier, MGA, and broker systems to eliminate the need for users to access separate portals.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead backend architecture and design for AI-driven SMS agents, managing conversation state, tool integrations, and insurance policy and claims systems.
- Build scalable and reliable infrastructure that ensures high performance and accuracy at scale within regulated insurance environments.
- Collaborate across technology stacks while focusing primarily on backend and AI engine development to connect agents with real-time customer data and live insurance platforms.
- Deliver impactful features that enhance the daily interactions of brokers, underwriters, and customers with insurance services.
- Exercise ownership and make critical technical decisions from the start in a high-autonomy environment.
Candidate Requirements
- Proven experience in backend development, especially in AI or complex system integration contexts.
- Strong understanding of designing systems that handle real-time data and conversation management.
- Ability to develop robust and scalable solutions compatible with regulated industry standards.
- Comfort working quickly and independently in a startup-like, fast-paced setting.
