Sanitation Operator

Position Overview

McCain Foods in Coaldale, Alberta is seeking a dedicated Sanitation Operator to join their team on a full-time, regular basis. The operator will be responsible for safely running sanitation equipment and executing essential cleaning tasks within the manufacturing plant to maintain food safety and quality.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate various sanitation equipment such as portable foamers, gellers, Hotsys, Zambonis, foaming stations, and hose repair tools safely and effectively.
• Conduct titration, pH, chlorine, and quaternary ammonium compound (Quat) testing of chemicals used in cleaning processes.
• Maintain accurate sanitation documentation and ensure orderly housekeeping in work areas.
• Perform scheduled sanitation activities including high-pressure washing, scrubbing, deep cleaning, waste disposal, and general housekeeping tasks.
• Manage mixing, handling, and distribution of cleaning chemicals, ensuring all substances are properly labeled, CFIA approved, and safely handled per WHMIS and TDG regulations.
• Address and resolve issues identified during daily food safety and sanitation audits through corrective actions.
• Lead the daily high-performance cleaning (HPC) routines and offer guidance to operations staff during plant cleanups and boil-outs.
• Execute light janitorial duties as needed and champion chemical safety and proper personal protective equipment (PPE) usage.
• Comply strictly with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), safety protocols, and hygiene standards in a regulated manufacturing environment, including uniform and personal item restrictions on the production floor.

Required Qualifications and Skills

• High school diploma or equivalent qualification.
• Basic proficiency with computers.
• Mechanical aptitude with the ability to diagnose and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions.
• Experience handling chemicals safely, knowledge of WHMIS, TDG, plant sanitation standards, HACCP, and AIB Gold certifications.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to follow instructions and collaborate effectively with supervisors and coworkers.
• Capability to operate safely in high temperature and humidity environments.
• Mathematical skills to perform basic calculations.
• Ability to manage time effectively, multitask, work independently, and prioritize tasks efficiently.
• Willingness to work rotating shifts, including all cleanup and boil-out days.
• Demonstrated record of safe work practices.
• Previous janitorial or sanitation experience is advantageous.
• Commitment to complete training and safely operate equipment such as forklifts, Zamboni machines, confined space procedures, personal fall protection, and scissor/boom lifts (minimum height requirement of 20 feet).
• Physical ability to perform tasks including lifting up to 50 pounds.
