Job description
Role Overview
This position involves physically managing packages by loading, unloading, sorting, and moving them manually in a secure and proficient manner. The Package Handler may be rotated or assigned to specific stations such as Loader, Unloader, Palletizer, Scan Weigh and Key (SWAK), Quality Assurance, Facer, or Switcher.
Key Responsibilities
- Handle packages through manual loading, unloading onto vehicles, pallets, conveyor carts, and load gratings.
- Continuously lift, push, pull, and carry packages during shifts lasting approximately 3-5 hours, potentially working multiple shifts daily.
- Sort packages accurately by scanning, reading labels and charts, verifying numbers, and memorizing relevant data.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned by supervisors.
- Specialized roles such as Package Handler Trainer deliver instruction on handling methods to peers, oversee safety compliance, and assist in implementing new procedures.
- Package Handler - Air roles conduct detailed inspections for air-restricted items, load packages properly into air containers, and document non-compliant packages for return.
Qualifications and Requirements
- No formal education or prior experience is required for basic Package Handler roles.
- Preferred six months experience with Federal Express Corporation for Trainer and Air Handler roles.
- Ability to comprehend and follow work and safety instructions precisely.
- Competence in sorting packages by recognizing numbers and information critically.
- Experience using manual tools and equipment including skate wheel rollers, dock carts, handheld scanners, and others.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to thrive in fast-moving team settings.
- For Switcher roles, possession of a valid driver’s license and maintaining a Department of Transportation (DOT) file is mandatory.
- Package Handler Air positions must complete and maintain specific airlift and regulatory training with annual recertification.
Work Environment
- Exposure to temperature extremes (hot and cold).
- Potential exposure to loud ambient noise.
- Regular lifting and carrying between 5 to 50 pounds.
- Travel is generally not required.
Schedule and Compensation
- Wages start at $20.37 per hour.
- Shifts include: Shift 1 (Mon-Fri 1:30am-9:30am), Shift 2 (Mon-Fri 1:30am-7:30am), and Shift 3 (Mon-Fri 4pm-7:30pm).
- Applicants must hold a valid Full G driver’s license.
