Lab Research Assistant

About the Role

The Molecular and Cellular Biology core at the Allston-Science and Engineering Complex provides vital biological research resources including instruments, technologies, services, and expert support. This core aims to expand research capabilities, build collaborative efforts, and accelerate scientific discovery and translation by assisting faculty, students, and staff in their work.

This position offers hands-on exposure working directly with researchers and involves maintaining the core's analytical laboratory equipment. The selected person will learn equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and user training on best practices. Additionally, managing lab space is part of the role. While prior experience is not required, familiarity with biology and usage of LC-MS instruments is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting of analytical equipment
• Conduct space safety orientations for lab users
• Provide basic training and orientation on equipment usage
• Prepare solvent solutions as needed
• Track inventory of supplies and equipment
• Regularly clean equipment and lab benches
• Manage equipment billing by utilizing reservation software in cooperation with the finance team
• Communicate policies and procedures clearly to users both in person and via email
• Order equipment, materials, and supplies for the Molecular and Cellular Biology core and Science Operations
• Create outreach and marketing materials to promote the core's services

Requirements

• Availability to work 6 to 14 hours weekly, over 2 to 4 days
• Flexible scheduling with consistent minimum commitment of at least one day per week
• Strong verbal communication, organizational aptitude, and problem-solving abilities
• Preferred: working knowledge of LC-MS, plate readers, or comparable biological laboratory equipment
