Job Overview
Based at the Macraes mine in Otago, New Zealand, this role involves performing safe and effective maintenance, servicing, and repairs on all mining machinery and related equipment within the open pit maintenance workshop. The Heavy Diesel Mechanic leads the team in executing long-term plans, including component changeouts. The position requires maintaining a professional approach and consistently high workmanship quality to ensure cost-effective maintenance.
The work schedule operates on a 7 days on / 7 days off / 7 nights on / 7 days off roster.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct repairs, maintenance, and daily inspections of the mining fleet and associated plant equipment in the field.
- Maintain and repair heavy machinery models such as CAT 789 C/D OHT trucks, CAT 18 graders, CAT D10T tractors, 992K and 988H loaders, and Hitachi EX3600 excavators.
- Respond to and fix breakdowns of the mining fleet and ancillary equipment.
- Perform general repairs and upkeep on mining, ancillary, and support plants.
- Complete routine servicing tasks like refuelling and lubrication when required.
- Carry out basic electrical repairs on the mining fleet and related plant.
- Execute planned replacements of machinery components and undertake component repairs or rebuilds.
- Accurately document and report usage of components, parts, ground engaging tools, and other resources via work-order job cards.
Qualifications and Skills Required
- Preferred: National Certificate in Automotive Heavy Engineering - Plant and Equipment Level 4 or 5, or equivalent industry trade qualifications.
- Desirable: Certifications such as First Aid, Forklift, Overhead Crane, rigging and slinging, Work at Height adhering to New Zealand standards.
- Must hold a full, clean, and current driver's license, including the capability to operate manual transmission vehicles.
- Experience in maintaining and repairing heavy mining machinery—including excavators, trucks, drill rigs, graders, dozers, and ancillary equipment—is advantageous but not mandatory.
- Strong diagnostic and problem-solving abilities enabling quick fault identification and repairs to a consistently high standard.
