Role Overview

The Estimator is tasked with delivering precise, competitive, and comprehensive cost estimates for construction projects, managing all phases of estimation for assigned scopes including quantity take-offs, subcontractor pricing, bid coordination, and cost evaluations.

This position collaborates extensively with Senior Estimators, Project Managers, and Preconstruction leadership to establish budgets, detect risks, and facilitate successful project outcomes from initial pursuit through project handover.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform thorough quantity take-offs for labor, materials, and equipment requirements.
  • Develop and maintain databases for unit costs, productivity rates, and pricing.
  • Prepare various cost estimations including preliminary budgets and detailed cost breakdowns.
  • Examine drawings and specifications to grasp all scope particulars.
  • Identify project risks, potential gaps, and areas for contingency inclusion.
  • Oversee the complete bid process for allocated projects and coordinate related activities.
  • Review contractual documents and supplementary agreements.
  • Organize tender packages, drawings, and addenda effectively.
  • Lead bid closure procedures and compile final submission documentation.
  • Ensure explicit documentation of all inclusions, exclusions, and assumptions.
  • Integrate Requests for Information (RFIs), clarifications, and addenda into final pricing.
  • Request and assess quotations from subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Prepare detailed comparison reports to highlight scope coverage differences and overlaps.
  • Negotiate pricing and scope alignment with trade partners.
  • Establish and sustain strong relations with subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Coordinate with internal teams to align estimates with overarching project strategies and execution plans.
  • Participate in design review sessions and value engineering to optimize plans.
  • Provide support during project handoff, clarifying scopes and ensuring budgets are aligned.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and lessons learned processes.
  • Adhere strictly to company policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required that relate to the role.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • A diploma or degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architectural Technology, or related disciplines.
  • Between 3 to 5 years of experience in estimating within a general contracting environment.
  • Experience handling commercial, industrial, or institutional construction projects.
  • Strong competency in reading and interpreting construction drawings and specifications.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and estimating/take-off software tools.
  • Familiarity with project management software such as Fieldwire is advantageous.
  • Good understanding of construction methods, standard contracts like CCDC, and trade practices.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and attention-to-detail skills.
  • Effective at communication and negotiation.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple estimates under deadlines.
  • Proactive approach with a teamwork-oriented and responsible attitude.
