Role Overview

The Customs Documentation Clerk is responsible for verifying tariff classifications in customs files and maintaining an accurate internal clearance log. This role ensures compliance with customs and local regulations throughout the clearing process and coordinates closely with airlines, shipping lines, suppliers, and contractors to facilitate smooth shipment handling in alignment with standard operating procedures and customer expectations.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Validate tariff classifications within customs documentation.
  • Regularly update and maintain the internal clearance log to reflect current statuses.
  • Ensure strict compliance with customs laws and local regulations before, during, and after shipment clearing.
  • Liaise effectively with relevant partners including airlines, shipping lines, suppliers, and contractors to guarantee seamless shipment processing.
  • Prepare customs documentation accurately and publish it on designated web platforms.
  • Initiate payment requests for duties and taxes with the finance department.
  • Complete and file all shipment manifests punctually.
  • Monitor shipments and accurately update company tracking systems such as the Operations log and Cargo Wise following business protocols.
  • Follow up consistently with shipping companies regarding arrival notices.
  • Submit export documentation as required.
  • Coordinate with customs brokers to obtain up-to-date clearance information for shipments.
  • Assist with the physical dispatch of shipments when necessary.
  • Ensure timely delivery of shipments to customers abiding by prescribed procedures and requirements.
  • Apply for any necessary permits mandated by customs authorities.
  • Review and verify invoices provided by customers to ensure accuracy.
  • Support activities related to Delivery Orders within the Port Community System (PCS).
  • Identify and report any non-conformities to foster continuous improvement in the work area.
  • Possess proficiency in preparing customs declarations for both imports and exports.
  • Demonstrate ability to verify tariff classifications directly with Jamaica Customs.
  • Maintain strong knowledge of customs laws, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Exhibit additional relevant operational competencies as required.

Requirements

  • Possession of at least a Bachelor's degree.
  • A minimum of one year’s experience in a related or similar role.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications.
  • Basic understanding of AFR and OFR operations including handling, documentation, and customs clearance processes.
