Job description
Overview
The Public Defence Service (PDS) in Christchurch is seeking an experienced criminal litigator with a background in team leadership to fill the role of Legal Team Manager (PAL2). This position offers a diverse caseload, including high-profile criminal matters, and an opportunity to work collaboratively in a supportive environment, fostering the growth of junior lawyers.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality defence representation for legally aided clients across a broad spectrum of criminal cases.
- Manage a varied caseload including challenging and prominent criminal matters.
- Appear in High Court and Court of Appeal proceedings as required.
- Lead, mentor, and supervise a small team of junior lawyers, supporting their professional development.
Required Skills and Experience
- Hold a PAL 2 level listing and be duly qualified to practice law in New Zealand.
- Demonstrate credible reputation with judges, legal peers, and the wider legal community.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a team-oriented environment reliant on mutual support.
- Passion for sharing legal knowledge, exchanging ideas, and managing legal professionals.
- Empathy and strong interpersonal skills to relate effectively to diverse individuals.

Salary and Application Details
The salary range for this position is $112,766 to $154,680 NZD annually, with flexibility to offer higher within the band to attract suitable candidates based on skills and experience.
