Role overview
RAC is hiring a Mobile Vehicle Technician for its Service, Maintenance & Repair (SMR) division in Exeter. This is a mobile, planned-work role focused on servicing and repairing members’ vehicles at locations such as home driveways and workplace car parks, rather than handling breakdown callouts.
Compensation and hours
- Base pay of £40,178 per year.
- On-target earnings can reach £52,000 per year.
- Guaranteed overtime is available to raise earnings further, along with additional overtime and bonus opportunities.
- Working pattern is 40 hours each week.
- Core working time is 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, with 1 Saturday in every 4.
What the SMR role involves
This position sits within RAC’s newer SMR team, which is designed around scheduled maintenance and repair work. Unlike roadside patrol work, the job does not involve emergency callouts, unpredictable shift changes, or recovery work. Instead, you will follow a pre-booked route of jobs with time, tools, and support provided to complete each task well.
You will cover the Exeter cluster, including Exeter, Exmouth, Sidmouth, Honiton, Tiverton, Newton Abbot, Torquay, Paignton, and Dawlish. Your day begins with a digital schedule, and each appointment is already arranged with the member expecting you.
Key duties
The work covers routine servicing, advanced fault diagnosis, workshop-level repair tasks, customer guidance, and RAC-standard vehicle safety inspections. The role is built around structured, planned jobs rather than reactive breakdown response.
From your first day, RAC provides a fully equipped van, fuel card, uniform, complete tool set, and advanced diagnostic equipment so you can carry out the work effectively on the road.
Why this role stands out
The SMR model offers planned appointments, a steadier workflow, more complex repairs, time to complete work properly, and built-in support for parts ordering and scheduling. It is suited to technicians who want independence, variety, and quality repair work without the unpredictability of patrol duties.
Requirements
- A Level 2 qualification in Light Vehicle Maintenance, or an equivalent credential.
- At least 2 years of experience as a vehicle technician working on light vehicles.
- A full UK driving licence with fewer than 6 points.
Who this role suits
This opportunity is a strong fit for someone who is confident working directly with customers, enjoys solving technical problems, and can work independently across a varied mobile schedule. It also suits technicians who want a stable national employer with room to build EV and diagnostic capability in the future.
Benefits and extras
- Free RAC Ultimate Complete Breakdown Service from day one.
- Option to join a car salary sacrifice scheme, including electric vehicle choices, after 12 months.
- 23 days of annual leave, increasing to 25 with service, plus bank holidays.
- Paid family leave, flexible working support, and practical help for personal commitments.
- Pension with up to 6.5% matched contributions.
- Life assurance up to 4 times salary, with an optional 10 times salary level through flex benefits.
- 24/7 confidential support service available for you and household members aged 16 and over.
- Access to Orange Savings discount deals across retail, holidays, tools, tech, and more.
- Eligibility for the Colleague Share Scheme after probation.
