About the Role
Sandvik is an international engineering group focused on advanced products and services for mining and construction. This permanent position is based in Portlaoise, County Laois, where you will support the upkeep, repair, and performance improvement of Sandvik underground and surface mining equipment used across Ireland.
The role suits a technician who enjoys hands-on problem solving, works well with others, and takes pride in delivering safe, high-quality service in a busy environment. You will work with the local service team and customers to reduce equipment downtime and keep machinery operating efficiently.
Main Responsibilities
- Carry out servicing, maintenance, and repair work on equipment.
- Prepare the right tools and parts needed for each job in line with work procedures.
- Handle commissioning activities, including pre-delivery checks and hot commissioning at customer sites.
- Use root cause analysis to diagnose and resolve common issues as first-line support.
- Identify machine components, understand how they work, and complete repairs in a cost-effective and preventive way.
- Recommend improvements to customer equipment or processes where relevant to the sales area.
- Apply technical knowledge to solve standard customer problems.
- Work across hydraulics, mechanics, electrics, automation, pneumatics, and materials interactions.
- Prepare maintenance and repair reports for internal teams and external stakeholders, including documentation needed for invoicing approval.
- Gather technical feedback from the sales area and enter it into the database when required.
- Allocate tasks to junior colleagues and support them in completing their work.
- Coach customer technicians on basic servicing and maintenance practices.
- Make sure all routine work is completed safely and in accordance with the provided tools and procedures.
- Take on additional tasks as assigned by management.
Experience and Professional Profile
You should be a motivated and well-organised technician with strong communication, teamwork, and people skills. A proactive, positive attitude is important, along with the ability to work in a multicultural environment and manage tasks with a focus on improving operations and business practices. A full clean driving licence is required because some travel may be needed. Training will be provided.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- At least 3 to 5 years of practical experience working with heavy construction or agricultural equipment such as excavators, loaders, telehandlers, and similar machines.
- Strong hands-on experience with hydraulic maintenance and fault diagnosis, including pumps, valves, cylinders, and hoses.
- Good understanding of electrical systems such as wiring, sensors, control units, and CAN bus diagnostics.
- Ability to use diagnostic tools and software to identify and fix faults efficiently.
- Familiarity with preventive maintenance planning and service records.
- Ability to interpret technical manuals, schematics, and engineering drawings.
- Strong troubleshooting skills and a proactive approach to solving problems.
