Overview

The Forensic Investigator I is responsible for carrying out forensic death investigations to clarify the circumstances, jurisdiction, and cause and manner of deaths including accidents, homicides, suicides, and suspicious cases. Duties encompass scene interviews, photographic documentation, evidence collection and preservation, and the handling and transport of deceased persons to the Division of Forensic Science. This role involves significant exposure to unpleasant and potentially hazardous environments, including body fluids and gases. Work schedules include overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts on a rotational basis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Examine death scenes by interviewing law enforcement, witnesses, and medical personnel while securing and photographing evidence and bodies.

  • Gather supplementary information by contacting relatives, healthcare providers, law enforcement, and legal personnel relevant to the deceased's health history and events prior to death.

  • Coordinate with tissue procurement agencies, pathologists, and next of kin for anatomical donations.
  • Compile detailed investigative reports including statistical data, body and personal effects receipts, and disposition documentation.
  • Participate in mass fatality response drills and preparedness activities.
  • Utilize laboratory information systems to report overdose data to health agencies.
  • Assist autopsy procedures through specimen labeling, suturing, cleaning, and imaging tasks.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum six months experience conducting sensitive investigations involving interviews, evidence handling, and documentation.
  • At least six months experience ensuring adherence to applicable laws, regulations, and standards.
  • Proven ability to produce clear, narrative investigative reports.
