About MDA
The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) is a leading U.S. voluntary health organization focused on people affected by muscular dystrophy, ALS, and more than 300 neuromuscular conditions. For 75 years, the organization has supported research progress, better care, access and inclusion, and community-building for families living with neuromuscular disease.
MDA is now moving into a more integrated strategic phase that calls for stronger mission leadership, a clearer external presence, a deeper clinical care strategy, and more advanced engagement with healthcare, policy, research, and biopharma partners.
MDA’s mission is carried out through four core pillars: scientific research, community, care, and advocacy.
Role Overview
The Chief Mission Officer reports to the President & CEO and is a key member of the senior leadership team. This executive leads mission advancement across Care, Community Engagement, Advocacy, Research, and aligned external partnerships. The role serves as MDA’s top executive voice for mission strategy and impact, converting the strategic plan into coordinated programs, measurable results, and a more visible, influential presence in the neuromuscular disease space.
The right leader will be trusted by clinicians, researchers, patient advocates, policymakers, donors, and biopharma partners. This person will help establish MDA as a respected convener, thought leader, and strategic partner in improving care, supporting the neuromuscular workforce, advancing patient-centered research and care models, and ensuring that the experiences of individuals and families shape organizational decisions.
The position also provides direction, oversight, and evaluation across Care, Community Engagement, Advocacy, and Research, while partnering with Healthcare Partnerships and other departments to reduce silos and unify work around the complete patient journey.
Executive Leadership & Strategy
- Advise the President & CEO, Executive Leadership Team, and Board of Directors on mission delivery, clinical care developments, community needs, public policy, industry trends, and organizational impact.
- Drive an integrated mission strategy across the organization by breaking down silos, encouraging collaboration, and aligning programs, services, messaging, and engagement around the patient and family journey.
- Promote a culture built on innovation, teamwork, accountability, inclusion, and community-centered decisions.
- Work with executive department leaders to provide regular updates to leadership and board committees on mission performance, strategic initiatives, community impact, emerging opportunities, and organizational risk.
- Turn the strategic plan into concrete operating priorities, cross-functional initiatives, and measurable outcomes.
Leadership Across the Four Mission Areas
- Provide executive direction, strategic oversight, and leadership for the four mission pillars in partnership with mission department executives.
- Research: Support patient-centered research, scientific collaboration, clinical trial readiness, registries, and initiatives that move the neuromuscular field forward.
- Care: Strengthen the Care Center Network, improve access to quality care, advance care coordination, develop the workforce, improve care quality, and prepare for emerging therapies.
- Community: Grow programs and services that build connection, engagement, independence, and quality of life, while making sure the experiences of individuals and families guide organizational priorities.
- Advocacy: Back public policy efforts, coalition work, healthcare access, and systems-level improvements that support better outcomes for the neuromuscular community.
- Ensure mission programs and services address the varied needs of individuals, families, caregivers, clinicians, and allied health professionals while encouraging collaboration across all four areas.
External Leadership & Partnerships
- Represent MDA as a senior spokesperson and ambassador at conferences, policy forums, coalition meetings, media events, donor gatherings, industry convenings, and community programs.
- Strengthen MDA’s position as a national leader by contributing thought leadership across clinical care, healthcare access, patient-centered research, clinical trial readiness, workforce development, and emerging therapies.
- Work with department executives to build and sustain strategic relationships with clinicians, researchers, care center leaders, patient advocacy groups, policymakers, payers, donors, healthcare organizations, and biopharma partners.
- Support responsible collaboration with industry while protecting MDA’s scientific integrity, independence, and community trust.
- Spot opportunities to bring together coalitions, expert convenings, grant efforts, and public-private partnerships that address neuromuscular field challenges, and coordinate mission teams to execute those efforts.
Program, Operational & Financial Leadership
- Lead the creation, rollout, and ongoing improvement of innovative programs and services that expand access to care, independence, connection, and health outcomes for people living with neuromuscular disease.
- Work with mission department executives to define key performance indicators and evaluation systems that track mission impact, program effectiveness, and organizational outcomes.
- Use data, community input, and performance measures to shape program improvements, allocate resources, and guide strategic decisions.
- Direct annual planning and budget development for mission departments, ensuring resources are managed responsibly.
- Make sure staffing, departmental resources, and investments support successful delivery of MDA’s strategic plan.
- Partner with Development to align funding plans, donor engagement, restricted funds, and mission priorities.
